"Web Publishing and Design" is Next Generation Online Training From O'Reilly and DES

Press release: June 12, 1998

SEBASTOPOL, CA--Online training is finally ready for prime time. O'Reilly & Associates and Digital Education Systems (DES) have wedded the Web's interactive capabilities with elegant, user-friendly course design to create an online learning experience that goes beyond previously available courseware. Fittingly, they are creating a series of ten Web-based courses for Web developers. "Web Publishing and Design," the introductory course in the series, is now available. A complete course description and registration information are at training.oreilly.com.

"Web Publishing and Design" is designed for the novice who wants to create a web site from scratch. Course material is based on O'Reilly's "HTML: The Definitive Guide," the bestselling and most highly respected guide to HTML. With the course's Online Lab, students can write and check their code as they learn. To complete the course, they demonstrate the breadth of their learning by completing a capstone project--they design a working web site.

Topics in "Web Publishing and Design" include:

  • HTML tags, columns, rows, tables, and colors
  • Introduction to Web browser and plug-in software
  • Creating and manipulating images and multimedia
  • Mastering tables, style sheets, and frames
  • Understanding push/pull and interactive, multimedia content
  • Page and site design issues

Because the course is available via the Web or intranets, it's well-suited for both individual and group learning. Online labs, code-checkers, virtual white boards and other interactive elements bring the experience of being in a classroom to the desktop. Students learn on their own time, at their own pace, at home or work. Instructors can teach from anywhere.

"Web Publishing and Design" provides a ready-to-go framework for businesses and training companies looking to present in-house training with their own instructors. Web-based courses also offer a complete curriculum for college and university distance learning and extension programs.

Educators and trainers who are interested in licensing "Web Publishing and Design" and other O'Reilly/DES training courses can contact Joe Sinsheimer (303/573-1284). For International licensing inquiries, contact Ron Tomich (707/829-0515). Individuals can take the course at an introductory price of $199.
